The High Commission staff, joined by members of the Wellington Rotary Club and the New Zealand-South Africa Chamber of Commerce committed 67 minutes of service to BGI Wellington to help clear their community orchard and garden of weeds. The High Commissioner also planted a Feijoa tree to continue a tradition between the BGI and the High Commission. The activity formed part of the Mandela Day initiative and community outreach of the High Commission, recognising the community it exists within and the importance of living as a part of that community, all inspired by the life of service of Nelson Mandela.
As part of its Mandela Day outreach, the High Commission visited the Wellington Women’s House to deliver various items that will be used by the residents as they move into permanent housing. The work done by the volunteers to support vulnerable women in the community and to help restore their confidence and dignity resonates with the work of Nelson Mandela to fight for the dignity of all human beings from all walks of life.
